The 2025 update expanded their ethnicity breakdown to 3,600+ geographical regions and "Journeys" — narrative-style migration paths. Ethnicity estimates are detailed enough to distinguish sub-regional origins in many areas, though accuracy varies by reference population density (well-represented regions like Ireland or Scandinavia get much more precise results than underrepresented ones).
Honest downsides: Ancestry charges subscription fees for full access to genealogical records (the DNA test itself is one-time, but tree-building tools are subscription-based). Ethnicity Estimates Are Estimates
Every test's ethnicity breakdown is a statistical model, not a historical fact. Your "32% Irish" result means your DNA patterns resemble those in their Irish reference panel — it doesn't mean exactly 32% of your ancestors were Irish.
